Application programming interface (API) is a piece of software developed to provide an interface that interacts with other software.
E.g. A website that allows users to book a taxi is able to layer their taxi locations over maps Google Maps, because Google Maps has an API that allows the display of this interface. Google Maps' API controls what information the third-party site can use, and also what can be done with the information.
